Beignet Fries

Beignet Fries on a plate with chocolate sauce

Growing up in Louisiana there is food that I consider comfort food that most people have never heard of and beignets is top on my list.  My first memory of eating beignets as a child is at the original Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. Eating french donuts on the edge of Jackson Square , listening to the jazz musicians playing on the street and looking up at the big ships pass on the Mississippi River. Yes I said looking up, strange but true lol. The smell of the donuts frying and powdered sugar in the air, this was all very magical to me. Now making these Beignet Fries run a close second to the real thing. If you want to try something a little easier try my Easy Beignets.

Beignet Fry being dipped in Chocolate sauce

Beignet fries are all the rage right now , they have the same flavor as it’s bigger version but smaller and a bit crisper. Dipping these powdered sugar coated fries in chocolate just sends this to a whole new level of yumminess. I am not sure I can look at a plain ole beignet again and not think of it needing chocolate . When I make beignets at home I snag a box of the Cafe du Monde from a local supermarket , I realize most people don’t have access to this product. I did a little experiment and made these with the traditional mix and made them with bisquick. I honestly like both versions so I am including them both but either way you must make the Chocolate Dipping Sauce, the dip is a game changer.

Start with your mix of choice

Cafe du Monde mix

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and sprinkle a little flour on top also

Preparing mix

Roll the dough pretty thin , about an 1/8 of an inch

Rolling dough

With a pizza cutter cut thin strips like fries, they will puff up a bit when frying

cutting dough

cutting fried

Drop strips into preheated grease flipping them when one side get golden brown

dropping the beignet fries in hot oil

Flipping the beignet fries

Drain on a paper towel

Cooling beignet fries

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with Chocolate Dipping Sauce

Awww now you’re making me miss New Orleans! I found it fascinating standing out back behind Cafe du Monde watching them fry the beignets. No visit is complete without a sugar fight either!
